Visual Artist + Cultural Advocate

Aretha Brown is a proudly queer, Blak visual artist and screenwriter from Melbourne’s western suburbs. Her work blends bold storytelling with truth-telling and is informed by her lived experience as a young Aboriginal woman growing up in an urban colony.

Working across paint, pop culture and public space, Brown uses her practice to amplify Blak voices and disrupt colonial narratives. Her approach is direct, collaborative and grounded in accessibility, with work that moves fluidly between cultural, public and commercial contexts.

Brown was among the youngest artists to exhibit at the National Gallery of Australia, opening the 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial(2025–26) with her largest and most significant project to date. Her work has also been shown at the National Gallery of Victoria, West Space Gallery, the Australian National University and the University of Melbourne. She has collaborated with Apple, Amyl and the Sniffers, KNEECAP, Greenpeace, Converse, Puma, VOLLEY, Bad Apples Music, Strawberry Fields and Pitch Music & Arts Festival.
