THE BIRTH OF A NATION: THE TRUE HISTORY OF AUSTRALIA is Aretha Brown’s most significant work to date, developed as an extension of her ongoing Teach Blak History project. The work was presented as part of After the Rain, an exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia, and comprises a 50-metre mural accompanied by an original sound work and an interactive learning space.

Presented as the opening work of the 5th National Indigenous Art Triennial at the National Gallery of Australia, the project offers a direct account of Australia’s history through Brown’s lens of truth-telling and lived experience. Working across image, sound and space, the project foregrounds Blak histories while demonstrating the breadth of Brown’s multidisciplinary practice.
