RAINBOW CHAN
RAINBOW CHAN

Vocalist, Producer + Artist
Rainbow Chan is an award-winning vocalist, producer, and multidisciplinary artist whose practice bridges popular music and contemporary visual art. Her work explores cultural representation,(mis)translation, matrilineal histories, and diasporic heritage, with a sustained focus on women's oral traditions. Central to her practice is the bridal lament tradition of the Weitou women—Hong Kong's first settlers. This endangered vocal form, to which Chan has deep ancestral ties, is reimagined through music, performance, and immersive installation, translating these songs into contemporary contexts while preserving their subversive feminist voices and reflecting on loss, resilience, and collective memory. Ritual, song, and performance function in her work as both a means of reclaiming agency and as a living archive.
Chan's critically acclaimed solo song-cycle The Bridal Lament has been presented at major festivals and institutions including Sydney Festival, Arts House, Liveworks Festival, and OzAsia Festival. She was named Artist of the Year at the 2022 FBi SMAC Awards and recognised in the 40 Under 40: Most Influential Asian Australians Awards for her contribution to arts and culture. Alongside her solo releases, Chan composes for film, television, and theatre, and is signed to Gaga Music Publishing. She is an active mentor and educator, and currently serves on the She is an active mentor and educator, and currently serves on the Next Wave’s Arts Advisory Board.
